When you tune your kalimba on our site, numbers appear under the large note letter — for example, +40 cents or −15 cents. Beginners immediately have questions: what is this even? Do I need to reach an exact zero? Why do the numbers jump around?
Let's go through it all in order — without unnecessary theory, but enough that you understand what you're doing.
A cent is a unit for measuring pitch. It exists to describe precisely how much higher or lower one note is than another.
The main thing to remember: the distance between two adjacent notes (a semitone) equals 100 cents. For example, from the note C to the neighboring C# is exactly 100 cents.
Accordingly:
A "plus" sign means the sound is higher than intended; a "minus" sign means lower. The bigger the number, the larger the deviation.
The short answer is no, and here's why.
The human ear isn't perfect. Most people can't distinguish deviations smaller than 5–10 cents at all. In other words, a note tuned to +7 cents sounds perfectly clean to the ear — you simply won't hear the difference from a perfect zero.

Green is your "good enough" signal. There's no need to spend effort and nerves chasing an absolute zero. The moment it turns green, the note is cleanly tuned — move on to the next.
This is normal and happens to everyone. It comes down to the physics of the kalimba's sound.
At the moment of the pluck, the sound is sharp and "dirty" — full of overtones, with an unstable pitch. Then the sound begins to fade, and as it fades its frequency can shift slightly. So in the first fractions of a second after the pluck, the tuner shows jumping numbers — it's honestly reflecting the unstable sound.
What to do about it:
Focus on the readings about 0.5–1 second after the strike, once the sound has stabilized. That's the cleanest, steadiest tone of the tine — and that's what you should tune.
Don't try to catch the value at the very instant of the pluck — it will almost always be inaccurate.
Honestly, you don't even need to dig into the numbers to tune a kalimba. Two things are enough:
The cent numbers are useful when you want to gauge the scale of the problem:
Many beginners try to tune a kalimba by ear or "roughly." The problem is that without a reference point, the ear is easily fooled: a note can seem clean while actually being off by 20–30 cents. And when several such "almost clean" notes play together in a melody, the detuning becomes noticeable and grates on the ear.
The tuner removes that uncertainty. You see an objective picture and tune every note to the same precision — so the whole instrument sounds consistent.
Is it better to tune sharp (plus) or flat (minus)? It doesn't matter — all that matters is landing in the green zone (minimal deviation in either direction). If the indicator is green, it makes no difference whether it's +5 or −5.
Why does one note sound clean alone but out of tune with another? Most likely one of the two notes is tuned imprecisely (off by tens of cents). On its own the ear forgives it, but in a chord the detuning comes out. Recheck both notes with the tuner.
The tuner shows different numbers on every pluck — is it broken? No, that's normal behavior. The kalimba's frequency changes as the sound fades. Focus on the reading a second after the pluck, once the tone stabilizes.
What is A=440 Hz and do I need to change it? 440 Hz is the reference pitch for the note A, the international tuning standard. For a kalimba there's no need to change it — the standard value is plenty for playing and for playing along with others.
How precisely should I tune a kalimba for recording? For recording it makes sense to be more careful — try to keep the deviation within ±5 cents, because microphones and headphones reveal detuning better than live listening. The tuner's green zone is more than enough for this.
If the tuner says "tap from above" or "tap from below," trust it and give a light, careful tap with the hammer. There's no need to chase a perfect zero: as soon as it turns green, the note sounds clean.
